Until You Own It
Can you sell something that you don't own or don't have the legal right to?No, of course not.Yet, I see entrepreneurs try to do it every day.Entrepreneurs sell themselves. They sell their vision, their skills, and their products.So what's the problem? Of course they have the right to sell themselves in this way.The question is, do they own it?Do they fully believe in what their product or service does? Do they really believe in themselves? Do they really own the power of what they are selling?Until you own it, nobody can buy it.A client of mine shared her marketing message with me. It wasn't clear, exciting or compelling. We worked to strengthen it based on the results her clients were experiencing, through working with her, along with the knowledge and experience she brings to the table.We came up with a new message. It was clear and direct; it conveyed exactly what she did and what someone working with her could expect.Then she said, "Wow, I don't know if I can say that."No wonder her business wasn't doing well. No wonder her sales conversations weren't converting prospects to clients; she didn't own her own message. If she didn't believe in herself, nobody else would.Until YOU own it, nobody can buy it.This shows up in the lives of entrepreneurs in one of two ways.They either water down their message so much that they do believe it (like my client did) or they use the stronger message, that they don't believe. In either case the result is the same. No sale.
So what can you do to change this? Try this simple 30-minute exercise to help you own yourself.Step 1: Take 10 minutes to figure out exactly what your clients get by working with you or using your products. Dig deep. For instance, your clients may make money or lose weight but it goes beyond that. They make money so that they can take their family on vacation. Or they lose weight so they gain confidence and get a promotion at work.Step 2: Take 10 minutes to create a list of all the reasons you are qualified to help your ideal client right now, BEFORE you get your next degree or five more clients. Include all of your experience. For example, I bring in my background on Wall Street, my experience as a coach, my life and a mother, a wife and friend, my love of baking and the outdoors to every conversation I have.Step 3: Take 5 minutes to review what you have written. Read it aloud. Print it out.Step 4: Use the final 5 minutes to share it with someone and have him read it to you. Take it in. This is what you have to offer. Squeeze Ins
A client was a couple of minutes late to our call. He immediately apologized and told me he got caught up in a squeeze in, he was getting himself a cup of coffee.We laughed for a moment and then he got real serious. He said "You know, as I was getting the coffee I kept hearing your voice in my head asking me if what I was doing right now what needed to be done or was it a squeeze in."On the face of it, he was 2-minutes late to a phone call. Truly not a big deal; however, where else is this happening and what is the result?Let's back up for a moment.A squeeze in is something you do on your way to doing something else. It's not what you planned and it causes your plans to shift. It could be grabbing a cup of coffee on your way to making a phone call, stopping at the store to grab a few things before you go to a networking event, handling a couple of emails before you pick up the phone and make your sales calls.A squeeze in may seem like nothing, and even the right thing to do. It can derail your entire day.You get to your office. You have one specific thing that you must do. Just before you start you'll answer a few emails. An hour has gone by, you've answered emails. You have an hour less to work on your project.
You are meeting someone you met at a networking event for lunch. Before you leave your office you make one quick phone call. The call lasts five minutes longer than you expected and now you're late for lunch and you're feeling anxious. You're certainly no longer your best self.Taken individually a squeeze in isn't a problem, but they do add up. A client of mine said, "I feel like a fraud. Like what right do I have to build a business around my needs and my desires? 'Real businesses' don't get to do that. What right do I have to build a business my way and ignore what everyone else is telling me to do?"What do you think?Does someone have the right to ignore standard convention and build a business the way they want? Can someone simply decide to work three weeks a month or only four days a week? Is it okay for someone to say NO to a certain type of client even if she is more than capable of helping him? Don't you have to play by the rules of "real" businesses?What about those "real" businesses? What rules do they follow?I spent fifteen years working on Wall Street. I worked for the New York Stock Exchange for ten years and Datek Online (a major brokerage firm) for three You would think that both businesses would have similar environments; after all, they were both Wall Street institutions and had to follow the same rules.The New York Stock Exchange was exactly what you'd expect. The buildings were covered in marble from floor to ceiling. Boardrooms were big and imposing. Everyone wore suits and dressed "professionally". There was a clearly defined chain of command. There were rules to follow. There was an image to uphold.Datek Online was another story. I worked there from 1999 until Ameritrade bought it for $1.3 billion dollars in late 2002. At Datek we wore jeans and t-shirts. We had scooters we rode around the perimeter of the floor on rubber mats (like in a playground). Our conference rooms were open and airy. We had toys on our desks and were encouraged to take risks. We had an image to uphold too. The theme of our advertising was The Rules are Changing.

Secrets To Stepping Up and Owning Your Big Vision
A couple of weeks ago, I checked the stats and saw an interesting comment from an unsubscriber.She wrote, "I am not sure what I am supposed to get out of this."Maybe she was expecting "7 easy tips to xyz" or "5 simple steps to abc" - then sorry, I am not your gal. I truly believe our business can embody flow and ease... but only if we are willing to sit through the fire and uncover our Truth, and how we choose to express it. There is no free lunch.(By the way, you get what you want to get out of it - we all have different frames of reference. In my world, you are NOT "supposed" to do anything.)True, I do write about my experience often but it's no ego trip - after all, I am sharing with you my own evolution - heartbreaks, tears and sweat - real time.I write about it when the wound is still raw and the emotions are still flowing. I am not sitting pretty on a pedestal and showing off a sterilized version of "how I made 5 figures last month."Every time I sit down to write something so vulnerable, I want to puke.I don't do it just for kicks.My experience may be individual, but the undercurrent of emotions, fears, desires, is not. They are universal.They are human conditions.Unless you are some alien species, these stuff will come up in your life and business in one form or another, as your own individual expression. There was a wall blocking me from seeing it.I realized I have an expectation/disappointment issue. My way of dealing with disappointment has been to walk away. I have been protecting myself from being hurt by "walking away" from flakes and situations that I believed would let me down.It's OK when dealing with other people, but it becomes problematic when I am dealing with myself this way.If I declare my big vision and then default to my "walk away" M.O. then I will really disappoint myself for being a flake... and I can't handle that. It would feel like the ultimate failure.Instead of forcing myself to "visualize" some outcome or reciting some affirmation that I cannot yet fully believe in, I need to first demolish that wall so I can claim every part of this big vision.
***When I "agreed" to release this fearful part of me, I came upon a realization that could possibly crack this whole thing open (I am trembling as I type this... )One early morning as I was half awake, I encountered a part of me that was curled up and dark (think Voldemort in Harry Potter 1.)It was about refusing to trust, receive and accept. It was not confused. It was not fighting or screaming. It was dark, quiet, curled up. A dark crescent shape in my upper chest, wanting attention.This time, instead of avoiding the feelings and distracting myself with busy work, I am going to sit with it, feel it and listen to it so I can finally demolish/desolve the wall and see what's on the other side.***(So let me spell it out... here is what you can get out of this experience of mine... )We have all been hurt, let down, disappointed by others (or even ourselves) in one form or the other. Even though an incidence may seem insignificant when you look back, if you have not addressed the sadness, anger, and emotions fully and completely, it is driving (sabotaging) you subconsciously in some way.When the hurt happened, when the disappointments piled up, we tend to build a wall to protect ourselves.We fence ourselves in, and with that, fence our potentiality and possibilities out.Our Heart got callused, and our Guts got numb. We can no longer FEEL what is right for us, or use our intuition to guide our decisions.We fall into the illusion of safety created by following what other people tell us, so we don't have to walk out of the fence to face our own Truth (and risk getting hurt again.)Dig into that hurt, address it, feel it and let it run its course, so you can melt that fence fully and completely.Ask that part of YOU - what does it need to know to release its grip on you?This is not about doing that website, building that list or giving that workshop.It is about CLAIMING YOUR BIG VISION, LIVING YOUR FULL POTENTIAL and EXPRESSING IT THROUGH YOUR WORK in the world.Are you holding yourself back from claiming your big-ass no-compromise vision because you are afraid of letting yourself down?What do you get to lose if you flunk? You hear it all the time - if your price is higher than your competition you're told to "build value." You're instructed to stress the quality, the warranty, the features, etc. But your prospects have heard all that before, haven't they? Want a better way?Let's face it - if services or products are more or less the same, then prospects will buy from the people they like, know or trust. Your enthusiasm and belief for your product or service is a big factor in getting your prospects to place an order with you over your competition. Knowing this, I've often used the following script to not only build value in my product or service, but also to build value in the most important part of my product - myself. Here's what to say:If your prospects says, "I can get cheaper," or "Well the XYZ company has something similar for less money," or anything like that, say:"You know _________ I'm aware of all the other options for this (product or service) and I'll tell you now, if I thought any of them were better for my clients, I'd be working there and selling that."When I got into this industry I did my own research, just like you're doing, and I looked for the company that not only offered the best (product or service) but also delivered the best customer service and follow-up.
After all that, I chose (your company) because they give my clients the best overall value and the best experience. And that means they continue to do business with me and refer new business to me as well.__________, if there was a better product or company for you to be doing business with I'd be there and we'd be talking about that. How To Avoid The Doubt Trap
Doubt. Doubting one's self, one's value and one's capabilities. Doubting one's ability to build a sustainable business and live one's ideal lifestyle. Once you get caught in the doubt trap, it creates a tremendous downward spiral and it can be tough to pull yourself out.I hear this a lot from my clients and I, too, can relate because I have been there myself Today I'm sharing with you how you can pull yourself out quickly.Here are 5 ways to pull yourself out of the downward spiral:1. Know that your fear isn't real. It's your ego trying to pull you down and keep you where it feels safe. Growing and changing is threatening to the ego and wants to keep you playing small. It is actually working against you all of the time. It will try to show you situations that will cause you to doubt yourself. In essence, it is giving you a negative way to view what is going on around you. Know it's not real.2. Step into faith. Look at what you have created for yourself in the past. What has gone well? Remind yourself that you can do it again. Universe has a much bigger plan for you, but when you are in fear you won't be able to see it.3. Keep your vibration high. Meaning do whatever you need to do to feel good. Go for a walk, take a hot bath, listen to music or read something inspiring. Whatever it is do it. Don't try to talk yourself out of it. You won't be able to see the solution when you're inside the problem.
4. Shift your focus. Notice that you are focusing on the negative and you need to shift your focus to something more positive. Think about something / someone you really love. Sometimes just thinking about something you are looking forward to will do it. The goal is to shift your state so you can start to see the solution, and this will help you do it.5. Because being thankful adds so much richness and fulfillment to our lives - not just our personal lives but also our work lives. You work in a marvelous profession: you get to help people with the largest financial investment they'll likely ever make - one that often offers a lifetime of financial security.How often do you think about how rewarding your career is? I hope daily. I know I'm grateful every day for being able to coach agents and brokers, and take part in this grand, people-serving profession.I also know the benefits of being grateful. Mr. Robbins is absolutely right: fear fades and abundance truly does appear. Researchers have proven it. In one study, those who completed a five-minute-a-day gratitude journal felt healthier, reported more rewarding relationships and positive emotions, and felt better about their careers.When you're healthy, positive and effective at work, you're more productive. Gratitude makes us nicer, more trusting, more social, and more appreciative. The result? More friends, more contacts, more prospects and more business.For you brokers out there, take heed. Studies have shown gratitude makes you a more effective manager by improving your decision making, increasing your empathy, boosting your productivity and helping your mentoring skills. Participant Observation in a Qualitative Research, Reliable or Not?
Participant-observation is a data gathering tool that involves observation with the participants in a study using survey protocol or key informant interview (KII) guide. It is a very reliable source of information because researchers could actually see or observe the participants through immersion.Experiences of the participants can be observed and recorded through this method. There is also triangulation to ensure that biases or personal preferences may not hinder the manner of observing and recording meaningful experiences of the study. Triangulation ensures study credibility and transferability.Limitations To Any Participant ObservationJust like ay other data collection methods, participant observation has also its limitations:
The recorded observations about a group of people or event is never going to be the full description.
As mentioned before this is due to the selective nature of any type of recordable data process: it is inevitably influenced by researchers' personal beliefs of what is relevant and important.
This is also plays out in the analysis of collected data; the researcher's worldview invariably influences how he or she interprets and evaluates the data.
Observing" or "observant" participation has also been used to describe fieldwork which meant to highlight the way in which their partial or full membership in the community/subculture allows a different sort of access to the community and also shapes their perceptions in ways different from a full outsider.
There are advantages in using participant observation such as:1. it affords the backstage culture or the inside story of a participant;2. it allows richly detailed description such as the reasons, experiences, attitudes and dreams and aspirations of the participants;3. it provides opportunities for viewing or participating in unexpected events; and4. it improves data collection and interpretation.There are also disadvantages of using participant observation in gathering information:1. to rely on key informants rather than be interested in what happens out of the public eye;2. to gain different understanding of what is being observed based on the key informants;3. subsequent interpretations and representation problems occur when selected key informants are familiar; and4. the information collected is observed based on individual interest in a setting or behavior rather than being a representative of what actually happens in a group or culture.Although this method requires transparency and democracy during the process, the interpretations are integrated in the analysis. In reality there is a difference between what people say and do. With participant observation this discrepancy can be unveiled and discovered.Thus, unveiling the secrecy and confidentiality of information make participant observation a very reliable tool in conducting a study.

From Fear to Here
Fear seems to be the companion, if not the friend, of every entrepreneur I've ever met. That's the reality of being someone who seeks their edge, and steps over it out of their comfort zone. It's the reality of someone who wants to grow, both as a person and a business leader.That's who you are when you have your own business, a leader. And every successful business leader has had to deal with fear.When I first wanted to start my business, I held off for 5 years (5 years!) before I made my move. I was scared of losing my 6-figure salary, and the apparent security of my corporate job.Once I did make the move, I'd like to say that supreme peace reigned, but really, it's been the same process over and over. An opportunity, scared, taking a deep breath, stepping toward the opportunity and out of my comfort zone, and then the new normal.As long as I continue to move to my edge, to step beyond it, the opportunities just keep coming and keep getting bigger!The question I get asked often by clients, in one form or another is, "how do I get past the fear? I want to move forward, but I'm afraid I'll make a big mistake, or lose what I already have."Yet the people who do take action in spite of their fears, apply consistent effort, and learn and adjust as they move forward are the ones who are successful.So how do you get from fear to here?Here are 6 strategies for moving through your fears:1. Reality check. Fear can be overwhelming, and our primal lizard brain can really take over in these situations. To keep this primordial activity in check, balance the fear with a look at what's real. Activating your cerebral cortex can help you see what's real and what's not. Fear often masquerades as reality (False Evidence Appearing Real), and taking a close look at it can wipe away the fiction.2. Feel your feelings fully. This may seem counterintuitive, but there's research to show that if you emphasize your feelings, you gain benefits. It helps you to get clarity on their full extent, and they're less likely to sneak up on you later.3. Exaggerate your fears. Puffing your fears up a little can often result in comic proportions, and you have to laugh. That laughter not only releases energy. It also lets you see how you might be able to laugh at your own imaginings.
4. Friend your fears. I once created a little image that has helped me tame my own fears. Her name is Stella, and she's a pink lizard. Stella is the holder of my fears. She's the personified lizard brain, the part of your brain that is trying to protect you, to warn you by freaking out when something scary happens. By creating this separate imaginary being, it helps to detach from my fears, gently observe them, and even play a role in calming Stella down. That has proven to be incredibly effective, plus a lot of fun. While Stella is shrieking with anxiety, I get to stroke her little lizard head or sit her on my lap to comfort her. These days, Stella is often an amiable companion, sitting poolside wearing shades and drinking an umbrella drink. A comforting thought.5. Accept risk. All growth requires risk. You are risking the status quo for what can be. It's not a certainty. Balancing risk with benefits is a good way to look at risk, as a measured chance you taking on something more, something better. Is it worth it? Only you can say. But if you want your business to grow, it is certain that some risk will be involved. If you accept that, it makes the uncertainty easier to bear.6. Take action. The worst thing you can do when you are scared about doing something you know you want to do is to procrastinate. It lengthens the amount of time you spend in those emotions and wears you out in the process. That leaves you with little energy to do what you know must be done. Even small actions can break this cycle of, fear-procrastinate-more fear. Spend your energy on taking action, instead of resisting what's yours to do.Fear is a given. It will always pop up when you are even thinking about meandering outside your comfort zone. It's not about having fear. It's about what you do to create the work, and the life, you want, in the face of it.That's how you get from fear to here, the place where you achieve your goals, and live the life that is yours.

Is It Time To Be "Irresponsible" For the Sake of Good Business?
I just spent 6 days cycling/hiking in Zion National Park/Byrce Canyon - and it was absolutely amazing. I rode 230 miles over 5 days, including some "hairy" descents - going 35 mph down the canyon with cliffs on both sides (speed limit is 20 mph for some, so technically, we could get a speeding ticket for riding a bicycle.)As I checked this trip off my bucket list (which also includes climbing Mount Kili and chasing penguins in Antarctica), I got nostalgic about the days when I bumped around the world with a backpack and my Nikon FM2 (that uses film... remember those?)Back in the days, my guts would simply say "I am going!" and off I went to Europe, Tibet, Scandinavia, Iceland, the Patagonia, Silk Road, the Eastern Bloc... you name it.That was before the age of hyper-connectiveness... which means I actually had to "wing it" if something was not booked in advance.The most rewarding adventures often came with some level of following my guts and improvising as I went. Sure, there are the outliers that are just coasting through the day, watching the clock for when they can punch out, but we all can recognize and deal with those people pretty well. The harder challenge is those staff who are working really hard, but are busy working on the wrong things.How do you make sure that someone in your practice is working on the right things? The simple answer is to track and report on the work that matters most in your office. In some cases, this report can be something as simple as a text message or email. In other cases, you might automate the reporting so that the accountability is built directly into the practice's regular workflow.Reporting and accountability is an extremely powerful concept for a practice. Not only does it ensure that the practice is working on the right things, but it improves productivity as well.
